Now some teaching from Rocky Sandberg, the Director of the Lower Columbia Healing Rooms.
Good morning. It seems that I’ve encountered so many people lately who’s baggage from past experiences with
church or church people have kept them from victory. Though I find that sad and apologize for what the church has
or has not done right up to this point I want to direct my words today to those that are carrying the baggage. “Lay it at
the cross! Put the baggage down! Get on with your life.”
When you’ve been hurt in the past and bring that into your next relationship with church life you’re not being fair to
your new friends, your new pastor, and I believe that you are condemning your future relationship with them to almost
certain failure.
Let me give you an illustration that I believe closely represents my point.
The practice of slavery in the United States (or anywhere else) is wrong. I could never support that. No-way, no-
how. That being said, there are no longer any persons alive who were slaves before abolition. Nor are there any
persons whom were slave owners in the United States left breathing on this earth. As unfortunate as slavery was
there is nothing that I can do to right the wrongs of the past for them. I can do my best to make sure that nothing like
this ever happens again but punishing anyone of this generation will not bring one ounce of relief to those that have
already died.
Likewise in the church, when you bring your baggage from the past, and levy unreal expectations upon brothers
and sisters who are trying to do their best to help you, then you are taking it out on the wrong people… You end up
operating with a big chip on your shoulder making everyone “prove that they are not like those that hurt you” even
before you give them half a chance. That’s like trying to swim with a bucket of concrete in each hand. Why would you
want to do that?
I know that it may require you to become vulnerable. I don’t want to see you hurt again but I do want to see you
become healthy and successful. Step out and place yourself in God’s hands. He is doing something exciting and new
in the church today. Don’t let past offenses keep you from enjoying the blessings alongside your brothers and sisters
in Christ.
God bless, Rocky Sandberg and the Kingdom Power Now Ministry Team
